Tattoo removal-Fact and fiction
Laser tattoo removal is considered the standard of care for tattoo removal. The limitations is depth of ink and sometimes color. In those areas where the ink is not deep such as on the lip and eyebrow the laser can remove a tattoo in a few sessions. Fingers are also easy. The hand is a little more difficult. Tattoos on the arms, legs, chest and back can be deep and require as many as 10 or more sessions at least one month apart. Darker skin individuals can experience some temporary discoloration of light spots within the tattoo or ink bleeding into the surrounding skin resulting in a grey stain. This can be treated with the laser. It is imposssible to predict if ink will be completed removed with a laser. A shadow of the tattoo is common. The best other option besdies laser for very small tattoos such as tear drops on the face is to cut the tattoo out in one session and leave a small insignificant scar. it is less costly than repeated laser sessions. Some ink colors are hard to remove- yellow does not respond well to any laser system. Yellow is used as a base color by tattoo artists. To develop light green, it is a yellow base with a green overlay; similarly other light colors will have a yellow border , a yellow base with another color on top. These areas can lighten but not be removed by laser.Other options such as retattooing with paste can be effective but are very time consuming and can only remove 2 square inches per hour. A larger tattoo could require 2-5 hours of work. The re-tattooing causes a thick dark crust which takes several weeks to fall off and leaves raw tissue which is very sensitive. This can work on any color but causes scarring in at least 6 per cent of cases even when done an expert.Scarring with this technique is more common on the arms and legs. Lastly. internet products in my experience scar. The blogs are full of stories of mail order products not working, but my personal experience has been scars on the face chect and arms which are impossible to completely correct. My advise, if its small cut it out. If larger laser is the safest option. Otherwise, learn to live with it.
